The construction of the memorial construction began in 1403 on the orders of Timur. The construction is located on the ruins of the buildings' ensemble that were built by Mohamed Sultan - one of the Emir's grandchildren. The complex consisted of madrassas, mosques, minarets and a lot of khanaka. The young prince raised up all these constructions for himself. Moreover he has lived at those buildings for a little period of time. But according to some unknown reasons, Timur ordered to completely dismantle that complex and start to build a new mausoleum on its place. Only crypt prince, small fragments of marble walls with gold-plated and blue-domed minarets have survived from buildings of Sultan Muhammad. However, the royal tomb Gur Emir has still been substantially maintaining its original appearance. Every year this place is visited by thousands of tourists and pilgrims in order to raise their tribute to the fearless conqueror Timur.
